Classes

Introduction

classesClasses are very focused on the holistic approach to teaching and stimulating an individual at his current level of functioning to allow for natural and supported development and progress.


We cover a set syllabus of Bharat Natyam that is practiced at our school in India.
This starts with adavus, theory and then dance items.

Classes

All classes are grouped according the level and age group of the students.

  • GROUP 1- Juniors: they have completed 5-6 groups of adavus, 15 aspects of Theory, and 3 dance items.
  • GROUP 2 – intermediates: 7-8 grps of Adavus, same theory and 4 dance items
  • GROUP 3 – Senior 1: More adavus & Theory and 5 dance items
  • GROUP 4 – Senior 2: Adavus, Koravais, Advanced Theory and 8 dance items
  • GROUP 5 – senior 3: All the sets of adavus, advanced theory, and 2 full margams or dance repertoires. 15-20 items.

  • Warm Ups
  • Adavus
  • Items
  • Korvais and jathis
  • Music notations
  • Theory from the Natyashastra
  • Assignments, projects
  • Exams and assessments
  • Art and Yoga
  • Presentations and Discussions in class.

Venues

We have 3 centres in Durban:

  1. Asherville on a Monday- David Landau Community Centre
    Grp 1 – Juniors ( beginner class) 4 – 5Grp 2 – Juniors 2 – dancing for about 3 – 4 years. 4.30 – 6.00pm
    Grp 3 – Seniors: 6.00 – 7.30pm
  2. Phoenix- Tuesdays, Saiva saithantha Sungam Hall, Greenbury Phoenix
    Seniors 4 – 7pm
  3. Chatsworth on a Saturday - Havenside Community Hall
