The Story (Krsna Leela)

Venmonie_Govender__Verushka_Pather_smlPoornamasi, the wise gopi who has orchestrated the pastimes of Krsna and scripted the love story between Radha & Krishna is our story teller. The leelas unfold through her eyes and her love for Krishna.

On a radiant auspicious day the deity is carried on a chariot in a procession by the gopis of Vrindavan in an item of MALLARI. A tradition of  welcoming and viewing the deity around the Temple. They celebrate their love & reverence for the Lord and welcome Him in their special garden. Poornamasi looks on and smiles at this young love and innocence, not knowing the magnitude of Krishna's birth and purpose. She calls on the gopis to join together and dance on this full moon night, the Raas leela. Krishna seing this joins the gopis in, Brindavana. The gopis dance in ecstacy, immersed in Krishan's beauty and love. Poornamasi says that this vision is like having Darshan of the Lord. And the story of His leelas will unfold via His Gopis. But for that moment it is just the bliss and ecstacy to dance with Krishna and know that they are the chosen devotes. Poornamasi looks at the vibrant movements and then shares the true essence and purpose of the Birth of Krishna in the VARNAM.

"Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice. O, descendant of Bharata and a phenomenal rise in religion at that time I descend myself."

The Varnam showcases the most important epic stories of Krsna's birth from,

PUTANA GAJENDRA MOKSHA KALIYA    SUDAMA  GOVARDHANA VIRAT ROOP DRAUPADI

From allowing us to see the reverence from the gopis to the Veeram of Krishna she then shares with us the different types of relationships that one has with the Lord.

Brita_Narotam_Verushka_Pather__Kalaiyani_Iyapian_smlThe Gopis and Poornamasi praise the endurance and bhakthi of the gopis performing the varnam and they tell her,' Yes He may be a great divine soul that has conquered many challenges, but if you wish to know all about Krishna, ask His mother Yashoda. She will have lots to say. The trouble he gives her, and all the complaints from the people of Gokul and Vrindavan. These naughty cowherd boys, Krishna and Balarama are up to no good.' Poornamasi laughs and her innocence at not knowing the Poorna Avatar. They visit Yashoda and she smiles saying that today, in MAADU MEKKU KANNA Krishna is not allowed to go outside. He gives me many reasons how the village cannot function without Him, but not today. She giggles and says, ' I have threatened Him that demons & thieves live down at the Yamuna and they will put Him in a bag and sell Him at the market. And do you know what He tells me, that he is the biggest rogue and He will just take His stick and wipe them out. This small boy with big ideas.' A mother's love - Vatsalyam always there to protect and shelter us.

Poornamasi tells us that soon Krishna's interest moved from just the cows and Balarama, He now had His eyes on the Gopis. But they as young as they may be have always loved Krsna. She shows us 3 young maidens in CHALIYE' trying to entice Krishna to come down to the Yamuna and play with them. They are Mugdha Nayikas, young, innocent and unfamiliar with the art of love. Even if Krishna just holds their hands or blows a kiss they will melt with excitement. The gopis tell Krsna that the surging waters of the Yamuna are like our feelings for Him. The sprays are like His touch. Can you hear the birds what do they sing about, the love between you and me. Even if you wished to leave me, you cannot as you are locked away in my heart, Come Oh! Dear lord lets embrace on the beautiful banks of the Yamuna.

grpDSC_0017As Poornamasi and another matured gopi walk along the banks of the Yamuna, they see Krishna with the Gopis. This Kanditha Nayika - (angry & steadfast in her belief) in INDHENDHU, is terribly upset with this sight. She returns to her home and says she will wait for Krishna to come to her. When He does, He realises that the night is not in his favour. She asks, 'What are you expecting by coming to my house. I am not like the other girls. Thinking of their beautiful smiles have you come here, or is it their fish like eyes or voluptuous bodies. Have you been blinded by the bright moonlight that you have come to the wrong house. You are the great lord who has raised the Govardhana Mountain and the Kasturi Tilakam is a divine mark on your forehead, and this is what you call respectable behaviour?

Please leave, Go. The other ladies house that you are looking for is not here, please go.'

Having and experiencing an array of emotions is the true essence of Life. Poornamasi, by creating some difficulty or obstacles for Krishna, is for Him to have a more meaningful, appreciated and ecstatic meeting with Radha. So she consoles the goips when they are angry or hurt by Krishna but they all know that His heart belongs to Radha.

Poornamasi goes to meet Radha and to initiate another meeting for the 2 love birds. But when she arrives she sees her and there is something very different about her, SAKI HE KESHI MADHANA. She smiles and calls her into her room and says that she wishes to share a secret with her. Shy and overwhelmed with  love & passion she holds onto her friend bursting with enthusiasm, and shares with her the first night that she has been intimate with Krishna. She explains the setting and His thoughtfulness in arranging the scenery especially for her. His gentleness in always making sure that she was comfortable allowed her to drape herself like a creeper on her lord.

Kalaiyani_and_PrindhavaniAll of these beautiful, ordained relationships of love are for us to see the opportunity that the Lord allows us to have with Him. Be it a past birth boon or Karma, each experience is predetermined by Divinity.  A very powerful and significant female in Krishna's Leelas is one who loves Krsna as a pure steadfast Bhaktha, DRAUPATHI. Her reverence for Krsna resulted in a significant lesson to be taught to humanity. Complete and selfless surrender to the Lord will allow you to have His darshan and His mercy. Only once we fully let go of the bondage of this birth and lifetime are we fully able to understand the purpose of our soul, to return to its maker, SAT CHIT ANANDA. Draupathi teaches us this lesson and she also vows to bring upon respect, honour and dignity to every female and that the wraths of abuse should not fall upon us. Her love, strength, conviction and noble actions for us is from her love & devotion to Krishna. Poornamasi tells us this story in the courtyard of Kauravas where Durayodhana drags Draupathi into the court and de robes her in front of the elders, Kings and the Pandavas. Krishna is her only salvation.

The realization of the eternal bliss of complete surrender is almost like freedom of your soul. On this realization Poornamasi rightfully invites all the Gopis and Krishan to join her in a dance of celebration, A TILLANA - KUNTALAVARALI. The gopis again try to win Krsna over and insist that Krishna dance with them. This vibrant, majestic dance of sculpturous poses reaches a crescendo were Krishna

shares a very significant verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam and His leelas, the headache pastime in the MANGALAM. When the goips rush over to give the dust from their feet for Krsna's headache, Krsna in turn announces to the world that His most dedicated, sincere and selfless devotees are His Gopis and that they have been especially chosen by Him. They are been blessed to have this boon in this lifetime and will attain moksham from sharing their souls with Krishna.

O my Lord You have shown your infinite love

And You so humbly say it's Your divine duty

All you have ever wanted Lord is for us to contemplate on your Name ceaselessly.

And then our protection becomes your duty

Hail to You Madhusudana, hail to You.
